Protocol description for complex letter matching task (LMT). (a) There were six levels of increasing difficulty. The addition of one relevant letter (A, B, E, H, K, M, and N) increased each difficulty level by one, such that difficulty = (# letters + 2). (b) Within this block design task, each of the 2 runs contained six 32 s task blocks that were pseudorandomly ordered. (c) Each task block is immediately followed by a 20 s baseline block containing irrelevant letters (O and P) to be ignored. (d) Example of four sequential figures in the task block for difficulty level 3. Stimuli are shown for 3 s and interleaved by a 1 s interstimulus cross.
