Inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Inclusion criteria

Age 40–80 years
COPD exacerbation requiring hospitalization in 3 months prior to inclusion
Past or current smoking history ≥20 pack-years
FEV1 ≤ 70%
FEV1/FVC ≤ 70%

Exclusion criteria

Asthma
Bronchiectasis
Pulmonary fibrosis
Mediastinal or lung mass
Life expectancy <6 months
