In the bacteriorhodopsin trimer (PDB-Id: 1brr), seven of 33 sequence motifs which were analysed in this study are present. Each motif can be written in a regular expression like XYn, where X and Y are amino acids separated by highly variable positions. For example, the LG5 motif occurrence (highlighted in red) corresponds to a pair of leucine and glycine residues which are separated by four amino acids.
