In the first step, MWCNTs are oxidized by HNO3 (a), and subsequently the oxidized MWCNTs are amino-functionalized by ethylenediamine (b). In the solid phase extraction step, mercury ions are adsorbed on the surface of amino-functionalized MWCNTs, and this is a kind of supramolecular interaction.
