(a) Organisms display the same preferences for amino acids within ancient FSFs ( = 0–0.2) of homologous sequences as they do in entire sequences. However, here Ser is also preferred more by the barophile. (b) Many amino acid preferences are erased in evolutionarily recent FSFs ( = 0.6–1.0) of homologous sequences. Some preferences were even reversed; the normally barophilic Gly and Ser are now used significantly more by the nonbarophilic organism. Statistical significance is marked with stars as described in Figure 2. A total of 55 recent and ancient FSFs were analyzed.
