The convention used for the parameterization is the one developed by Seber [23], with S representing the probability of survival from one occasion to the next, 𝑝 the probability of recapture in the following interval given the animal survived the interval, 𝑟 the probability of being recovered dead, and 𝐹 the site fidelity. The succession of events occurring during the period of observation is coded in an event history with information on alive or dead in the odd and even numbered places of the event history, respectively. For example, an individual marked and released on the first occasion, which survives the interval between occasion 1 and occasion 2 because it was recaptured at occasion 2, is subsequently recovered dead during the second interval. Its event history for these two intervals is 1011 (seen alive, not reported dead, seen alive, reported dead).
