Excitation spectra probing the velocity distribution in the rubidium state following pumping of the ( = 2)( = 1,2,3) resonance transition. The spectra are obtained by monitoring fluorescence on the transition, while scanning the probe laser over the transition. The position of the spike with respect to the pedestal depends on the detuning of the pump laser, which is set to maximize the total resonance fluorescence [8].
