The dot over the m denotes the deviation over time (dm/dt). The direction of the arrows indicates the direction of the mass flow in the one-dimensional, simplified analysis. If the value of the function is positive, the flow goes in the direction of the arrows (into the mask) and if the value of the function becomes negative, the flow goes out of the mask.
