Average intensity patch of the 12 most common intermediate root permutations in (6, 2) neighborhood (with interpolation) using test image 4 of Figure 5. The first rank from the left corresponds to the Eastern direction, and the following ranks are formed to the counterclockwise direction (North-East, North, etc.) It can be observed that the most common intermediate root permutations correspond now to the main edge directions specific to the test image.
