(a) A DMPC solvent solution was deposited onto Si wafers. The solvent was allowed to evaporate completely, resulting in highly oriented bilayers. (b) The wafers were then assembled into a sandwich sample in an aluminium holder with aluminium spacers, which was hydrated with D2O from the vapour phase.
