Effect of Fracture Aperture on P-Wave Attenuation: A Seismic Physical Modelling Study

Figure 2

Physical model made up of two layers: (a) base model, (b) sectional view of base model. The first layer is isotropic with a P-wave velocity of 2150 m/s and density of 1.15 g/cm3 while the second layer has six fractured blocks (each of same density), B1 to B6 in order of increasing chips’ thickness. The isotropic background of this layer has a P-wave velocity of 2573 m/s and a density of 1.175 g/cm3. The numbers shown indicate model dimensions in millimetres and the model is scaled up by 1 : 10,000 for spatial dimensions and time measurements.
