Reported equations for calculating flow tractive forces from bed shear stress and critical entrainment shear stress.

SourcesBottom shear stress

Modified DuBoys 𝑇 𝑐 = 𝜌 𝑔 𝑑 𝑆
Shield s βˆ— Miller et al. [23] 𝑇 𝑐 = 0 . 0 4 5 ( 𝜌 𝑠 βˆ’ 𝜌 ) 𝑔 𝐷 π‘š
Komar [24, 25] 𝑇 𝑐 = 0 . 0 4 5 ( 𝜌 𝑠 βˆ’ 𝜌 ) 𝑔 𝐷 𝐡 0 . 6 𝐷 π‘š 0 . 4

The modified DuBoys equation for flowing water in broad shallow channels relates its bed shear stress 𝑇 𝑐 (N mβˆ’2) to the fluid density 𝜌 (1000 kg mβˆ’3), gravitational acceleration 𝑔 (9.8 m sβˆ’2), flow depth 𝑑 ( π‘š ) , and flow slope 𝑆 (rise:run). The Shields entrainment relations, as modified by Miller [23], and Komar [24, 25], relate bottom shear stress to clast transport, where 𝑇 𝑐 is critical shear stress (dyne cmβˆ’2), 𝜌 𝑠 is grain density (g cmβˆ’3), 𝜌 𝑠 is fluid density (g cmβˆ’3), 𝐷 π‘š is grain intermediate diameter of the largest clast transported (cm), and 𝐷 5 0 is bed mean grain size (cm).
