Rosiglitazone-Mediated Effects on Skeletal Muscle Gene Expression Correlate with Improvements in Insulin Sensitivity in Individuals with HIV-Insulin Resistance

Figure 1

Gene expression for the gamma isoform of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARγ) (a), lipoprotein lipase (LPL) (b), carnitine palmitoyl transferase-1 (CPT-1) (c), and steroyl CoA-desaturase (SCD) (d) normalized to the expression of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) in subjects without HIV disease (control) and subjects with HIV disease who were either sensitive to insulin (HIV-IS) or resistant to insulin (HIV-IR). Insulin sensitivity was determined with the hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp. Gene expression is expressed as mean with SEM and has been multiplied by 100. #The expression of PPARγ was significantly lower in the HIV-IP group than in the control group by simple 𝑡 -test ( 𝑃 = . 0 3 ), in (a). *The expression of LPL in both the HIV-IS and HIV-IR groups were significantly lower than controls ( 𝑃 < . 0 1 ), in (b).
