The radiation pre&#8212;treatment process makes possible the mineralproperties modifications. In this paper theoretical principles of the influenceof the radiation pre&#8212;treatment by means of accelerated electrons on theelectrical conductivity and permittivity of selected minerals is analysed.The changes of specific conductivity, as well as permittivity in dependenceon the radiation dose and the grain size of minerals are introduced. On thebasis of these data the conditions of the above mentioned physicalquantities changes using the radiation pre&#8212;treatment from the mineralprocessing improvement point of view are defined.

The Influence of The Radiation PrE&#8212;Treatmenton Electrical Properties of Minerals

An evening panel discussion on magnetic units, attended by 150 participants, washeld at the 1994 Joint MMM&#8211;Intermag Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico,USA. The session was organized by C.D. Graham, Jr., and moderated by R.B.Goldfarb. The panel members were asked to describe the use of magnetic units intheir countries, and to make appropriate comments and recommendations. Inaddition to units, several panelists talked about distinction between magneticinduction B and magnetic field strength H, and the conversion of equations. Afterthe panelists&#39; opening statements, the floor was opened for questions anddiscussion from the audience. Panel Discussion on Units in Magnetism

Production&#x2013;scale application of the high&#x2013;gradient magnetic
separator VMS 100/2 to the recovery of manganese from the plant railings
is described. It has been found that in one&#x2013;stage separation the
concentrate containing 25 to 28&#x25; Mn can be obtained, with the recovery of
65.6&#x25;. In a two&#x2013;stage process the grade of the concentrate was 31.7&#x25; with
the recovery of 55.8&#x25; The final cleaning of the manganese concentrate
yielded a product with the grade of 35 to 41&#x25; Mn.

Recovery of Manganese From Slimes by High&#x2013;Intensity Magnetic Separation

New methods to reduce the total sulphur content of coals arebeing developed since the introduction of legislation requiring cuts insulphur emissions to the atmosphere. It is known that weakly paramagneticpyrite (FeS2) particles are difficult to remove from clean coal by standardmagnetic separation techniques. Data is presented here comparing standardmagnetic separation tests to results achieved when the coal is subjected to acaustic microwave leach pretreatment, prior to conventional dry magneticseparation. A significant increase in the removal of total sulphur is observedwhen this pretreatment is applied to the coal.

Microwave Pretreatment of Coal Prior to Magnetic Separation

A number of models of the high tension roll separator have beendescribed in the literature. All the models, in their calculation of thecentrifugal force component of the force balance, appear to assume thatparticles introduced onto the top of the roll instantaneously reach rollspeed. This paper questions that assumption. A theoretical analysis of theforces involved suggests that particles almost certainly do not reach rollspeed (even if they have been charged in a corona field) until they havebeen carried a considerable distance with the roll. Experimental evidencewas found to confirm the theoretical analysis, with 150 &#8211; 180 &#956;m zirconparticles having a speed of 180 rpm after travelling 55 degrees on a rollrevolving at 275 rpm.

This paper describes some industrial applications of magneticseparation in Swedish mineral industry. Recent studies on magnetictreatment of minerals in Sweden are also presented.
