The United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – an agreement amongst all UN Member States to transform our world for people, planet and prosperity. The SDGs aim to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and improve health and education while working to preserve our planet.
We are pleased to introduce our first article collection highlighting Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy.
Several areas of global development rely upon affordable and clean energy – including processes like agriculture, education and healthcare. Goal 7 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals focuses on access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
As of 2020, 733 million people globally still do not have access to electricity and 2.4 billion people still use inefficient and polluting cooking systems. Despite the progress made with renewable energies, they only made up 17.7% of total energy consumption in 2019. The latest research from the UN suggests that the current pace of progress is insufficient to meet the 2030 goals.
Promoting access to research, technology and investments in clean energy is one of the five targets associated with Goal 7. With our Spotlight on SDGs series, we aim to increase the visibility of some of this valuable research, making it easier for readers to discover work which furthers their understanding of the renewable and sustainable energies landscape and encourages action towards this goal.
The articles in our Spotlight on Affordable and Clean Energy cover a range of topics from solar energy, wind power and other renewable energy sources.
All Hindawi publications are open access, making it easier for policymakers and practitioners around the world to access the materials they need to make important decisions towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
