Effect of butyrate on secreted IL-8 from Caco-2 monolayers stimulated with IL-1β and ethanol. Human intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) were grown to confluency in 24-well plates, and monolayers were allowed to differentiate for 7 days. Cells were pretreated ± sodium butyrate (5 mM) for 18 h and then challenged with 25 mM ethanol and/or 10 ng/mL IL-1β for 3 h. Extracellular media was then collected and analyzed for IL-8 by ELISA.
