Application of Tools and Techniques for Carbon Minus Building Construction

Description

The housing industry is ever demanding due to urbanization and the increase in population. Although the construction industry contributes to the national gross domestic product (GDP), it also contributes to carbon footprint accounting. To cater to the demand, there is a need to look at the design considerations and the development of novel construction tools and techniques for achieving the goal of sustainable housing. This can be achieved by focusing on research related to resource conservation and development of alternative resources to conserve natural resources such as materials, water, and energy. The use of novel techniques such as prefab housing, products made that are prepared from novel binders, the practice of digital construction technology, and energy-efficient building designs to reduce the operational demand could be the key to achieve sustainability.

Although a lot has been focused on newer constructions, retrofitting of existing structures for improving functional performance and durability can also give way to look into the sustainability of existing houses. Application of tools for evaluating the life cycle costing/assessment could help to propose sustainable and novel building construction. The decision-making tools for achieving the green rating of housing could also be included as a checklist during the construction project lifecycle.

This Special Issue aims to collect original research and review articles to help the concerned stakeholders for delivering sustainable construction projects with the concept of carbon minus buildings. The Special Issue will focus on the themes noted below, but is not restricted to design, development, and performance evaluation.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Sustainable construction materials
  • Sustainable water management
  • Sustainable energy management
  • Tools for sustainable resource management
  • Digital technologies for sustainable resource management
  • LCA/LCC for sustainable construction
  • Transforming existing buildings into green buildings
  • Big data analysis for carbon minus buildings
  • Internet of Things (IoT) for achieving greener construction
  • Application of building information modeling (BIM) for sustainable construction
  • Project management techniques for resource conservation
