Advances in Transportation Geotechnics

Description

Transportation infrastructure is always associated with huge financial cost, and is time and labor consuming, whilst also undergoing degradation and failure due to the increasing traffic volume and changing climate. To this end, the need for a strong and reliable transportation foundation is more urgent and essential than ever for transportation infrastructure practices. Significantly, transportation geotechnics serves as a critical insight to build sustainable roadways, railways, airfields and ports, subgrades, or embankments. The geotechnical properties of the multi-layers, structures, and foundations are the prerequisite to the quality, service time, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure.

Future development of the transportation infrastructure tends to be larger, longer, smarter, and eco-friendlier, which brings new challenges to transportation geotechnics. New research topics have been brought forward by the development and evolution of transportation geotechnics, where more and more attention is being paid to the integration of emerging technologies, such as big data, artificial intelligence and smart materials, into the transportation infrastructure.

The aim of this Special Issue is to publish original research and review articles that on the latest developments and challenges in the field of transportation geotechnics. Papers submitted on new and emerging topics within the general discipline are also encouraged. We prefer comprehensive, innovative, ground-breaking research findings, rather than incremental, preliminary, or yet to be completed work. Theoretical papers are encouraged, while practice-oriented papers and case studies are particularly welcomed.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Geotechnical properties of geomaterials for rational and sustainable design and construction
  • Stabilization and reinforcement of geomaterials and Geosynthetics
  • Climatic effects such as freezing and thawing on geomaterials, behavior of transportation foundations
  • Geotechnics in underground transportation
  • Modeling of multi-layered structures and supporting ground under dynamic and repeated loads
  • Instrumentation, monitoring and maintenance for transportation geotechnics
  • Innovative materials and technology for earth-retaining structures
  • Geotechnical-seismic vulnerability of transportation infrastructures
