Artificial Intelligence Applications in Civil Engineering

Description

Artificial intelligence is to develop the machine elements that analyze the human’s thinking system and reflect the same to reality. In recent years, artificial intelligence applications have found a wide range of applications for solving small- and large-scale civil engineering problems such as design optimization, parameters estimation and identification, and damage detection. The increase in artificial intelligence studies with great acceleration shows that the use of artificial intelligence in civil engineering will increase in the coming years.

The focus of this special issue is on applications of artificial intelligence approaches in different fields of civil engineering. For example, the minimization of total weight for a steel, concrete, and composite structure can be obtained using genetic programming, estimating of energy consumption based on the available data can be obtained using artificial neural network, and optimal work schedules for the activities of a construction management can be made by using metaheuristic optimization algorithm. In particular, hybrid artificial intelligence studies in the fields of structural engineering, construction management, hydrology, hydraulic engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, coastal and ocean engineering, and materials of construction form the basis of this special issue. Besides, high-quality original research and review articles including applications of civil engineering using branches of artificial intelligence techniques (artificial neural network, fuzzy system, expert system, swarm intelligence, etc.) are covered in this issue.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Application of hybrid artificial intelligence approaches for hydraulic problems
  • Using artificial neural networks for estimation of the energy consumption obtained by dams and hydropower plants
  • Swarm intelligence for optimum weight of the structures
  • Metaheuristic optimization algorithm in design optimization of 2D and 3D steel or concrete structure
  • Genetic programming for large-scale civil engineering problems
  • Application of fuzzy logic in civil engineering problems
  • Machine Learning for mechanical problems in civil engineering
  • Optimization model for single- and multiobjective solutions for construction management
