Structural changes on photoexcitation. (a) The stick figure represents the dark structure, in which the chromophore and nearby ARG 52 residue are associated with brown lobes of negative difference electron density; (b) the stick figure represents the structure 2 ms after photoexcitation, where the chromophore is are seen to have swung outward from the center of the molecule by cis-trans isomerization, and the ARG 52 residue by a rotation of the side chain about its torsional angle. Both structural groups are now found in green lobes of positive difference electron density.
