(a) shows the stable storage condition without external RF field, where the electron trajectory is a superposition of a fast cyclotron motion, axial oscillation, and much slower magnetron drift. (b) shows an electron trajectory in presence of an RF field with a frequency which is tuned to the cyclotron frequency of the electron in the central part of the spectrometer. The stored electron is stochastically heated up every time it passes the resonance region. After less than 5 ms its cyclotron radius is so large that the electron hits the wall and is absorbed there.
