The Safeguard of Audio Collections: A Computer Science Based Approach to Quality Control—The Case of the Sound Archive of the Arena di Verona

Table 1

The Table summarizes the results of the FTIR spectroscopic analysis in ATR. In the first column there are the tape samples. For each of them, the material composing the base (column titled Back) and the side with the magnetic particles (column titled Front) is indicated. Tapes are identified only by the brand, because the model was unknown for all but one (Tape E: BASF SPR 50 LHL).

Sample Brand Front Back

Tape A TEAC PVC/vinyl-acetate copolymer Cellulose acetate
Tape B AGFA Polyester Cellulose acetate
Tape C MAXELL Polyester Polyurethane
Tape D TDK Pet Pet
Tape E BASF Polyurethane Not identifieda
Tape F Unknown Polyurethane Polyurethane
Tape G 3M Polyimide Pet
Tape H BASF Polyurethane Not identifieda
Tape I Unknown Polyurethane Not identifieda
Tape L Unknown Polyurethane Not identifieda

The presence of degradation products or of a mixture of materials does not allow the identification only on the basis of FTIR.
