The outer portion has a thin silicon layer of aluminum, previously vaporized to improve electrical contact between the silicon and an aluminum plate secured to the cavity by four screws (no. 4). Between the two electrodes, a DC current source was added and a milliamperimeter was used to supply and measure current.
