(a) In the immature neuron, the concentration of Cl− is higher in the intracellular space and, therefore, the opening of the channel leads to an efflux of Cl− and depolarization (excitation). (b) In contrast, in the mature neuron, the concentration of Cl− is higher in the extracellular space and, therefore, the opening of the channel leads to an influx of Cl− and hyperpolarization (inhibition).
