Effect of the opening of the GABAA receptor associated channel. (a) In the immature neuron, the concentration of Cl is higher in the intracellular space and, therefore, the opening of the channel leads to an efflux of Cl and depolarization (excitation). (b) In contrast, in the mature neuron, the concentration of Cl is higher in the extracellular space and, therefore, the opening of the channel leads to an influx of Cl and hyperpolarization (inhibition).
