On the Mechanism(s) of Membrane Permeability Transition in Liver Mitochondria of Lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis L.: Insights from Cadmium

Figure 1

Dynamics of 137Cs+ uptake by isolated lamprey liver mitochondria (LLM) depending on energization and presence of different concentrations of valinomycin. 137Cs+ uptake by the winter LLM was measured by the Millipore filtration method as before [31, 39] in the presence of different concentrations of valinomycin in acetate medium (50 mM Tris-acetate and 140 mM sucrose). 137Cs+ accumulation level is expressed as values of coefficients of distribution ( ) of the corresponding tracer between the energized mitochondria and the medium (for details, see Section 2). Mitochondria (0.5 mg/mL of protein), 137Cs+ (1  M), and valinomycin (1 nM) were administered from the start of the experiment; the other additions of valinomycin (if so) were indicated by arrow. Succ (2.5 mM) was added where indicated by arrow or was presented from the beginning of measurement. [CN], if added, was 1 mM. Typical traces for four independent mitochondrial preparations are shown.
