(a) Crystal structure of K5 and K14 coil heterocomplex (PDB accession code: 3TNU). This is a heteromeric assembly and perinuclear organization of keratin filaments. Regions from central-coiled domains of two filaments are interacting. (b) Representation of K18 caspase-cleavage sites during apoptosis. Keratin network regulates apoptotic machinery and confers a caspase-activation. The primary caspase-targets in epithelial cells are found in keratins type I family (reproduced from [2]).
