Graphic illustration of PMA (500 μg/kg) induced neurodegeneration in 17 different brain regions of 7-day-old rats. Degenerating neurons were visualized by De Olmos cupric silver staining and sampled by the optical dissector method to provide a numerical density (degenerating cells/mm³). The numerical density counts were added to give a cumulative score for degenerating cells for each brain region, and a mean was calculated for each treatment condition (–10 per group). Values are presented as mean ± SEM. , one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Newman-Keul post hoc test.
