Glia-Neuron Interactions in the Retina Can Be Studied in Cocultures of Müller Cells and Retinal Ganglion Cells

Prestarved Müller cells promote RGC survival during mitochondrial inhibition. RGC survival was analysed in cocultures with exposure to antimycin A (10 μM) for 24 hours. During compromised mitochondrial function, the presence of Müller cells had a significant impact on RGC survival when the Müller cells were prestarved ((b); 1.4-fold, ). The experiment showed no alterations of RGC survival in cocultures with sufficient energy supply (a) nor in cocultures with simultaneous starvation and treatment with antimycin A (c). Bars represent mean values ± SEM of 3–9 experiments. Differences were tested using unpaired two-tailed -test.
