Distribution of DNA and RNA m⁵C residuals. While C residuals of mRNA are likely to be methylated on 5′UTR, it is opposite on DNA. On DNA, the start codon and 5′UTR regions are less likely to be methylated compared with other regions to allow the initiation of transcription process.
