Banff 97 score: 0 = no arteritis; 1 = mild-to-moderate intimal arteritis; 2 = severe intimal arteritis with at least 25% luminal area lost; 3 = transmural arteritis and/or arterial fibrinoid change and medial smooth muscle necrosis with lymphocytic infiltrate in vessel. Giant cell score: 0 = absence of giant cells; 1 = giant cells surround less than one-third of the particle circumference; 2 = giant cells surround >1/3 to <2/3 of the particle circumference; 3 = giant cells surround >2/3 of the particle circumference. The following comparisons were statistically significant: Banff 97 score: 72 h group versus 4 w group (); 72 h group versus 12 w group (); giant cell score: 72 h group versus 4 w group (); 72 h group versus 12 w group ().
