Whole Peptidoglycan Extracts from the Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei M5 Strain Exert Anticancer Activity In Vitro

Figure 5

HT-29 cells were treated with 80 and 160 μg mL−1 of WPG for 48 h, and the apoptotic cells were investigated via transmission electron microscopic, original magnification 10000x (a). HT-29 cells were stained with PI (b), Annexin V-FITC/PI (c), and Rhodamine 123 (d) and then submitted to flow cytometric analysis. Positive control was 5-Fu and negative control was purified water. HT-29 cells that stained positive for Annexin V-FITC and negative for PI were undergoing apoptosis. The cells that stained positive for both Annexin V-FITC and PI were either in the end stage of apoptosis or already dead. The cells that stained negative for both Annexin V-FITC and PI were viable and not undergoing apoptosis (a).
