(b) Alpha-diversity metrics (richness and Shannon index) were employed to measure the microbial communities of samples from healthy patients and patients with periodontitis. The average richness of microbes was higher in patients with periodontal disease than in healthy patients; however, the microbial communities of healthy patients exhibited higher Shannon indexes.
