Staining and identification of cartilage tissue and cells. (a) Toluidine blue and alizarin red staining showed multiple rough and uneven cracks that extended to the calcified layer in the cartilage from individuals with osteoarthritis (OA). There was a significant reduction in the extracellular matrix. (b) OA and normal chondrocytes proliferated to same extent. (c) Mucopolysaccharide content and calcium precipitation were significantly higher in OA chondrocytes than those in normal chondrocytes. , , .
