Overexpression of MicroRNA-16 Alleviates Atherosclerosis by Inhibition of Inflammatory Pathways

miRNA-16 suppresses atherosclerotic plaque progression, reduces macrophage accumulation, and decreases inflammatory cytokine secretion in the thoracic aorta of ApoE-/- mice. Paraffin-embedded cross sections from agomiR control or agomiR-16-infused ApoE-/- mice were obtained throughout the thoracic aorta area and stained with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E). Macrophage accumulation was represented by CD68 marker expression. Expressions of CD68, IL-6, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-1β, IL-10, and TGF-β were determined by immunohistochemistry. (a) Representative images.
