Dendrite reshaping in Drosophila sensory neurons is mediated by matrix metalloproteinases. (a) Dendritic pattern of a single class IV neurons in 0 hr and 72 hr posteclosion adults. (b) Dendrites of Drosophila sensory neurons are rapidly reshaped within 24 hours after eclosion. This dendrite reshaping is promoted by the matrix metalloproteinase Mmp2-mediated degradation of the basement membrane, suggesting that proteolytic alteration of the extracellular matrix plays a fundamental role in remodeling of dendritic structures during reorganization of neuronal circuits.
