Methods in computation and mathematics have been extensively applied to problems arising from the biomedical sciences, especially when enormous data are being generated every day due to the emergence of the modern technologies such as RT-PCR, microarray, and next generation sequencing. The main focus of this special issue will be on the application of techniques typical of statistical modeling, bioinformatics, and computational biology domains to address problems in medicine. This special issue will become an international forum for researchers to summarize the most recent developments and ideas in these fields, with a special emphasis given to the technical and observational results obtained within the last five years. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Bioinformatics (including genomics and proteomics) with a focus on its clinical/medical applications
• Biological network modeling (including gene regulatory networks and gene-protein and protein-protein interaction networks) and systems biology with a focus on their clinical/medical applications
• Statistical genetics (including GWAS, QTL mapping, and pedigree analysis) with a focus on its clinical/medical applications
• Survival analysis and quality-of-life issues
• Analysis of medical images
• Epidemiology of diseases and clinical observational studies
• Comparative effectiveness research and patient-centered outcomes research
