Folic acid is reduced to dihydrofolate (DHF) then to tetrahydrofolate (THF). THF is converted to 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate (5, 10-me-THF), which is then reduced to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-mTHF) by MTHFR. 5-mTHF is demethylated to complete the folate cycle by donating a carbon into the methionine cycle through the methylation of homocysteine to methionine by methionine synthase and its cofactor vitamin B12.
