Discrete Optimisation for Complex and Smart Transportation Systems 2021

Description

Nowadays, transportation systems are becoming complex and smart. Smart transportation is comprised of systems in which information and communication technologies are applied in the field of road and rail transport, including infrastructure, vehicles, and users, and in traffic management and mobility management, as well as for interfaces with other modes of transport. Accordingly, many issues arise, and the study of these issues is worthwhile. Over recent decades, various optimisation techniques have been employed to improve the performance of transportation systems.

Often challenges facing complex and smart transportation systems come from the emergence of technologies in operational management, such as automation, sharing, and electrification, which are well recognised as three revolutions in the transportation and logistics industries. Autonomous shipping is considered to be the future of the maritime industry. Due to economic, physical, and environmental constraints, a number of sharing platforms have emerged, and at the same time, electric vehicle (EV) technologies have matured. Therefore, these three revolutions bring new challenges when researching complex and smart transportation systems.

This Special Issue aims to produce good models, methods, and solutions to generate managerial insights, and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and costs of future complex transportation systems. We invite papers with significant and substantial contributions to optimisation management in complex and smart transportation systems. The published papers should make significant advancements to both the theory and practice of operational management in transportation systems. We welcome both original research and review articles.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Intermodal transportation and connectivity
  • Dynamic management based on real-time data for transportation systems
  • Transportation big data dynamic analytics and applications
  • Electrification of transportation and infrastructure design
  • Sharing economy in transportation
  • Rail operations, management, and scheduling
  • Air transportation strategy, operations, and management
  • Road traffic operations, management, and control
  • Maritime transportation and port operations
  • Logistics and supply chain management
