New Trends and Recent Advances in Operation Research on Supply Chains

Description

Discussions of the resiliency, sustainability, and agility of supply chains are important in the research and management of supply chains. Ivanov proposed that a viable supply chain is characterized by these factors in its network design. Resiliency is essential as disruption and demand fluctuations are forced upon supply chains and the effects of these are unknown for many managerial supply chains. The application of novel technology in the supply chain, such as blockchain, Internet-of-Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) as agility tools can assist and enable the transition to streamlined production. There is great fluctuation in demand and many customers are shifting to the use of e-commerce meaning that many supply chains that lack e-commerce are likely to be unsuccessful.

In addition to resiliency and agility, attention needs to be paid to the sustainability of a supply chain in terms of its network design and production planning. In the strategic, tactical, and operational decisions, the environmental impact, energy consumption, and social impact need to be considered. Carbon emissions, carbon trading, and waste management are effective solutions to decrease the environmental impact of supply chains. The use of renewable and clean energy is also viable for managing environmental impact. It is therefore important to maintain and manage human resources that represent the best solutions to ensure the welfare and sustainability of the supply chain, and the application of new technologies to supply chains such as blockchain technology and smart contracts require modeling to demonstrate the advantages of these new technologies.

This Special Issue aims to investigate the management of resiliency and sustainability in supply chains. We are seeking contributions from authors presenting novel mathematical models toward ensuring resiliency, sustainability, and agility in supply chains. Both original research and review articles are welcome.
