Apoptosis evaluated by the abundance of active caspase-3 expression, in the distal part of the jejunum in NBW (a, c) and IUGR (b, d) and 7-day-old piglets in the crypts (a, b) and in the apical part of the villi (c, d). Apoptosis in IUGRs is decreased in the apical part of the villi and increased in the crypt area as compared to NBW.
