Increased Levels of S100A8/A9 in Patients with Peritonsillar Abscess: A New Promising Diagnostic Marker to Differentiate between Peritonsillar Abscess and Peritonsillitis

Figure 6

PTA score (SPTA) was developed by the addition of one point each for symptoms like trismus, halitosis, uvula edema, unilateral swelling of the arched palate, S100A8/A9 > 2550 ng/ml in the serum, and S100A8/A9 > 8180 ng/ml in the saliva. Patients with acute tonsillitis, peritonsillitis, and peritonsillar abscess show significant higher SPTA values in comparison with the controls. Furthermore, a significant difference of SPTA values between the PTA and the PC cohort was detectable (a). ROC analysis of the PTA score revealed a cut-off value of SPTA = 2.5 (sensitivity = 0.92, specificity = 0.93, ) to identify patients suffering from PTA (black: ROC curve in black, grey: diagonal association line) (, and ).
