Matrix Metalloproteinases as a Pleiotropic Biomarker in Medicine and Biology

Description

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases directed to digest numerous extracellular proteins. Since the first member of MMPs was discovered in vertebrates over 50 years ago they are intensively examined as a potential cause of numerous diseases. Their ability to cleave different collagens entailed that MMPs were considered as essential factors for tumor and metastasis development. Later the discovery of activation of several biologically important compounds by MMPs shed new light on their role in the metabolism. MMPs are investigated by researchers from different branches of medicine and biology. The activity of some of the enzymes is related to specific diseases; therefore they can be considered as biomarkers of different diseases.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles related to MMPs.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Recent development of MMPs as the biomarkers of different diseases
  • The role of MMPs in the pathogenesis of diseases
  • The physiological role of MMPs in human metabolism
