Flavonoids Induce the Synthesis and Secretion of Neurotrophic Factors in Cultured Rat Astrocytes: A Signaling Response Mediated by Estrogen Receptor

Flavonoids increase the protein expressions of neurotrophic factors in time-dependent manner. (a) The chemical structures of the most effective flavonoids, calycosin, luteolin, genistein, and isorhamnetin, in inducing neurotrophic factors in cultured astrocytes. (b) Calycosin, isorhamnetin, luteolin and genistein at the concentration of 10  M were applied to cultured astrocytes. Conditional medium was collected at different time points (0–72 hours), and the concentrations of neurotrophic factors were measured by ELISA kits. Values are expressed as the fold of change ( basal) against the control (no treatment at various time points; set as 1) and in Mean SEM, .
