(a) Immunohistochemical staining results of the MVD. MVD was defined as a discrete CD34-positive endothelial cell aggregate, with or without definable lumina. Higher MVD could be detected in model CD44+ mice compared with model CD44− mice; β-elemene could inhibit the MVD in a dose-dependent manner both in the CD44+ and CD44− groups (original magnification 400x, positive areas are indicated by white arrows). (b) MVD in the different treatment groups. The model CD44+ mice showed a higher MVD than did the model CD44− mice ( , ), and β-elemene reduced MVD in a dose-dependent manner. Statistically significant differences in MVD could be detected in 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg in both the CD44+ or CD44− groups.
