Methanol and Butanol Extracts of Paeonia lutea Leaves Repress Metastasis of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Figure 1

Growth-inhibitory effects of extracts of P. lutea leaves. SAS cells were grown in a monolayer ((a) and (b)) or on soft agar ((c) and (d)) culture. Methanol (ME), ethyl acetate (EA), butanol (BU), butanol-insoluble (BW), and water (W) extracts of P. lutea leaves were added to the culture medium at 0 (control) and 1, 10, or 100 μg/mL. After 7 d, the cells were subjected to MTT assay ((a) and (c)) and crystal violet staining (b) or examined under a phase-contrast microscope (d). Data in (a) and (c) are means ± standard deviations of 3 cultures; the mean of the control cultures is taken as “1.” versus control. Bars, 100 μm (b) and 200 μm (d).
