Asteraceae Artemisia campestris and Artemisia herba-alba Essential Oils Trigger Apoptosis and Cell Cycle Arrest in Leishmania infantum Promastigotes

<div>Apoptotic effect of essential oils of Artemisia herba-alba and Artemisia campestris. Promastigotes were analyzed by flow cytometry after treatment with increasing amounts of Artemisia herba-alba (a, b) and Artemisia campestris essential oils (c, d) followed by a double staining annexin V/7-AAD. In control experiments, the parasites were incubated with 0.05% DMSO (vehicle), 1 μM staurosporine (positive control), or 0.5 μg/mL amphotericin B (leishmanicidal reference drug). Both essential oils trigger apoptosis in L. infantum promastigotes in a dose- and time-dependent manner.</div>
