Vasorelaxant and Antioxidant Effects of Aframomum pruinosum Gagnep. (Zingiberaceae) Seed Extracts May Mediate Their Cardioprotective Activity against Isoproterenol-Induced Myocardial Infarction

Figure 3

Oral administration of the aqueous (AE) and ethanolic extracts (EE) of Aframomum pruinosum seeds did not affect the heart rate (panels (a) and (b)) but significantly prevented the tachycardia (panels (c) and (d)) induced by isoproterenol (ISO) in rats. Animals were treated for two weeks before induction of myocardial infarction with isoproterenol (ISO, 85 mg/kg). Data are expressed as mean ± SEM (n = 8–9). statistically different compared to distilled water (DW) or naive. statistically different compared to 5% DMSO + ISO. Numbers in the legend refer to the dose in mg/kg. Prop: propranolol.
