In the modern and contemporary world, the incidence of metabolic disorders and diabetes (especially type 2) is rising continuously due to modernization in life style and unhealthy dietary habits. Herbal medicines can be beneficial against such ailments. Indeed, nature is the best cooker of medicines due to the fact that natural products have been optimized to interact optimally with the biological systems through a long natural selection process. Natural products therefore has been a source of therapeutics for millennia, and during the past century, many drugs were developed from natural sources. Currently, we are witnessing a great progress in evidence-based modern medicine and pharmacology. The characterization of pharmacological and biological effects of herbal-based medicines is becoming more competitive and complex, with the involvement in this research area of experts belonging to different scientific fields, including botany, chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. However, despite this great progress in evidence-based modern medicine and pharmacology, traditional medicinal plants continues to be practiced without regulations in many countries. It is crucial hence to keep on studying medicinal plants efficacy in vitro and in vivo including their toxicity in order to prevent their abuse.

We invite investigators to contribute original research and review articles dealing with the physiological as well as molecular and biochemical efficacy of medicinal plants and natural active compounds in treating metabolic disorders and diabetes in vitro and in vivo. We are interested in articles that explore aspects of medicinal plants and their active compounds in metabolic disorders, insulin sensitizing and particularly in the research of new molecular targets directly related to metabolic disorders and type 2 diabetes.

  • Isolation and characterization of novel medicinal plants active compounds possessing anti-diabetic and metabolic disorders potential benefits.
  • Recent advances in drug discovery from medicinal plants with anti-diabetic and anti- metabolic disorders potentials.
  • Identification and validation of novel targets of medicinal plants and active compounds insulin sensitizer, as well as studies of related fuel metabolism.
  • Identification of the cellular target of the effective anti-diabetic plant extract(s), e.g. proteins and genes involved in the insulin action pathway.
  • Therapeutic benefits of currently used plant-extracted supplements and their underlying biological, and molecular mechanisms in delaying evolvement of metabolic diseases
  • Potential association between systemic diseases and metabolic diseases, and benefits of reducing systemic diseases with plant extracts on progression of metabolic diseases
