Herb-Drug Interactions: Systematic Review, Mechanisms, and Therapies

Description

As more herbs are used in daily life, the safety of the coadministration of herbs and Western drugs should be brought to attention. Even though the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Western medicines are well known, the corresponding knowledge of any coadministered herbal products has not been well studied due to their complex components and variable amounts of active components between products. In addition, reports on drug-drug or even herb-drug interactions focus more on pharmacokinetics than the pharmacodynamics. However, either part cannot be ignored in practice, especially for the interactions happening between a single-component Western medicine and a multicomponent herbal product. Herb-drug interactions are an essential area that needs to be addressed in the form of both high-quality scientific research as well as thorough systematic literature review. We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Systematic review on the herb-drug interactions of Western drugs with a narrow therapeutic index
  • Recent development in research technologies for herb-drug interaction using genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
  • Mechanistic studies on herb-drug interactions
  • Clinical outcomes on herb-drug interactions, including clinical manifestations and casualty management
