Natural Products for the Treatment of Obesity, Metabolic Syndrome, and Type 2 Diabetes

Description

Modernization of life style and dietary habits has given birth to enemies of mankind such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes. These modern-day diseases are taking epidemic proportion across the globe affecting both developed as well as developing countries. Taken together, these diseases claim the highest number of deaths worldwide leaving behind cancer. Although various synthetic drugs are available for treatment of hyperlipidemia/hypercholesterolemia and related disorders such as obesity, steatohepatitis, and atherosclerosis, ironically manifestation of side effects greatly limited their usage. Further, synthetic antidiabetic and hypolipidemic drugs are also unable to alleviate the pleiotropic effects of these metabolic disorders. On the other hand, herbal medicines are gaining increasing popularity and recognition in the management of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes because of their minimal side effects. Thus, herbal medicines represent future hope for the pharmacological management of these diseases due to their multicomponent, multitarget actions.

We invite investigators to submit original research and review articles on preclinical and clinical evaluation of natural products as therapy for diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The topic would include medicinal plants, natural products, and herbal medicine in Asia, Ayurvedic, and other countries. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Studies on antidiabetic and antiobesity potential of herbal extracts/compounds using in vitro and in vivo experimental models
  • Clinical trials/reports on the efficacy of medicinal plants/natural products for the prevention/treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes
  • Natural products for diabetic complications and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Role of natural products in ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammatory conditions associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type II diabetes
  • Safety evaluation of known antidiabetic and antiobesity plants/natural products
